Sandro Tonali’s future looks set to become one of the key talking points of the summer transfer window, with Arsenal reportedly receiving the go-ahead to make a move for the Newcastle United midfielder.
The 25-year-old Italian, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan and remains contracted at St James’ Park until 2029, could be nearing the end of his stint under manager Eddie Howe, according to recent comments from his agent.
In addition to Arsenal, Premier League heavyweights Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester United are also believed to be monitoring Tonali’s situation closely. The midfielder, who has represented Italy at international level, is expected to make a decision on his next move only after the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
Known for his aggressive tackling and excellent vision, Tonali has cemented his reputation as one of the standout central midfielders in the Premier League. Transfermarkt currently values him at around €80 million (£70 million), a figure that reflects both his talent and his potential for future growth.
His agent, Giuseppe Riso, has fuelled speculation about a possible transfer, suggesting that this summer could see Tonali seek a new challenge. “That’s right, that was the goal from the moment he went to England, to try to make him a stellar footballer,” Riso said when asked whether the plan was to elevate Tonali to the top tier of world football. “I think he’s the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world.”
When questioned about whether interest from Arsenal or Manchester City might develop quickly later this year, Riso replied, “I don’t know, but it’s very likely. Everyone is waiting for the World Cup, then a thousand situations are created, but it all starts after the World Cup.”
Riso added that the upcoming transfer period is expected to be particularly active. “It will be a very intense session, because so many teams have to renew themselves,” he said. “In the year of the World Cup, the market starts in fact when the tournament ends. Clearly, many negotiations start setting them up now.”
Tonali has previously spoken about his positive working relationship with Eddie Howe and his commitment to Newcastle United, but the situation now seems to be reaching a critical point as the summer approaches.
Whether Tonali will eventually line up under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal or choose another destination remains to be seen, but it’s clear that his future will be one of the most closely watched stories in the coming months.
