England international James Maddison has called for Tottenham Hotspur to launch an internal review into what he described as the club’s “astronomical” injury problems during the season, which left the team battling to stay in the Premier League.
The former Leicester City midfielder missed a large portion of the campaign after suffering an ACL injury in pre-season but made his return from the bench in Spurs’ final three matches. His return proved timely, as Tottenham secured their top-flight status with a 1-0 win against Everton on the final day.
Dejan Kulusevski, another key figure for Spurs, last played in May 2025, while forwards Dominic Solanke and Mohammed Kudus were sidelined for nearly half of Tottenham’s Premier League fixtures due to fitness issues.
The team’s injury list worsened when Xavi Simons sustained a cruciate ligament tear, further threatening their survival hopes. However, with Premier League safety now guaranteed, Maddison believes the club must look into why injuries have been so frequent and severe.
Maddison commented, “Our situation with injuries has been worse than any other club. People might say, ‘Oh, but we’ve had this or that’, but ours is astronomical and we need to understand why.”
He added, “Sometimes it’s just bad luck. Sometimes it’s coincidence — like me tearing my ACL or Dejan Kulusevski getting a terrible knock from Marc Guehi. That’s not about the medical team, the pitch, or any of the other theories people throw around; sometimes that’s just nonsense.”
The sight of injured teammates Dejan Kulusevski and Cristian Romero watching from the stands during the win over Everton summed up Spurs’ season-long battle with fitness concerns.
Maddison went on to say that Tottenham’s relegation fight could have been avoided had the squad remained fit throughout the campaign. “We’ve been a bit unlucky,” he explained. “But as I said, the big names we’ve missed really do make a difference — you can’t deny that.”
“Myself, Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, and Rodrigo Bentancur all spent months out injured. If we’d had those players available for the full season, I genuinely believe we wouldn’t have been in this position. That’s not me being naive — that’s just the reality. Still, I’m proud of the lads for digging deep today.”
Maddison, who joined Tottenham after Leicester City’s relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season, has now made 78 appearances for the North London club, scoring 16 goals and winning the Europa League last season. The 29-year-old remains hopeful that understanding and addressing the injury crisis will help Spurs avoid similar struggles in the future.
