VfL Wolfsburg’s relegation from the Bundesliga has brought with it a number of remarkable stories. Among them is the case of Aaron Zehnter, who joined the club from SC Paderborn last summer. Ironically, just a year later, it was his former team that condemned Wolfsburg to the 2. Bundesliga.
Yet, the most striking narrative surrounds Dieter Hecking. The Wolfsburg head coach’s efforts to save the team from the drop ended in failure, forcing him to face the reality of Lower Saxony’s first relegation in nearly three decades — 29 years to be exact.
There is, however, a darkly humorous twist to this. Hecking is no stranger to the experience of relegation from the Bundesliga. Only last season, the 62-year-old was unable to prevent VfL Bochum from going down.
With this latest setback, Hecking has now become the first coach in the history of the Bundesliga to suffer relegation in back-to-back seasons — an unfortunate distinction no manager would want to claim.
The seasoned coach, who has seen both highs and lows in his long career, surely could have done without this particular milestone.
