Nine-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has given Argentina a major fitness concern ahead of their World Cup title defence after sustaining an injury while representing Inter Miami.
The 38-year-old forward, expected to lead his national team at this summer’s tournament across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, suffered the setback on Sunday during a Major League Soccer clash.
Messi limped off the pitch against Philadelphia Union after appearing to experience discomfort in his thigh.
Inter Miami later confirmed in an official statement that the injury was in fact related to his hamstring.
“[Messi] had to leave the field yesterday, Sunday, May 24, during the match against Philadelphia Union, due to physical discomfort,” the club’s statement said.
“After undergoing further medical examinations this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
“The timeline for his return to full fitness will depend on his clinical and functional recovery.”
It remains uncertain when Messi will be fit to play again, raising fears that he could miss part of the forthcoming World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 11, with Mexico taking on South Africa in the opening group match at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City.
Argentina, who lifted the trophy in the previous edition, start their campaign against Algeria on Wednesday, June 17, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
They will then face Ralf Rangnick’s Austria five days later at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, before concluding their group stage fixtures against Jordan at the same venue on Sunday, June 28.
