Enzo Fernández’s future at Chelsea has become one of the most talked-about subjects at Stamford Bridge following his gesture to the travelling supporters after the team’s 2-1 defeat against Sunderland. The moment, which some fans interpreted as a possible farewell, has fuelled growing speculation about whether the Argentine midfielder could be on his way out this summer.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Fernández made a noticeable gesture towards Chelsea fans at full-time at the Stadium of Light, which naturally intensified rumours about a potential transfer. Jacobs further reported that the 25-year-old World Cup-winning midfielder would welcome interest from Real Madrid, while preliminary and informal discussions have already taken place with Manchester City.

Despite the growing chatter, Chelsea’s position remains firm: the club has no intention of selling Fernández this summer if it means taking a financial loss on their accounts. This stance underscores the Blues’ determination to protect their investment, given that Fernández arrived from Benfica in 2023 for a British-record transfer fee.

The latest episode adds to what has been a turbulent and frustrating season for Chelsea. Their defeat to Sunderland on Sunday encapsulated the chaos of their campaign. The 2-1 loss, combined with Wesley Fofana’s red card, officially ended Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for European competition next season.

On the other hand, Sunderland completed a remarkable turnaround, clinching a Europa League place just a year after earning promotion from the Championship. The achievement marked a fairytale ending for the northeast club.

For Fernández, the absence of Champions League football is a major concern. At 25, with a World Cup medal to his name, he is at the peak of his career and understandably wants to compete at the highest level of European football. Chelsea’s underwhelming season has left the club in a weaker position when it comes to convincing elite talents to stay, particularly when clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City are showing interest.

Real Madrid’s admiration for Fernández is hardly surprising. The Spanish giants are known for targeting world-class midfielders, and Fernández’s combination of technical ability, passing vision, and composure in big matches make him an ideal fit for their setup. Reports from The Independent have suggested that Madrid are expected to make a formal approach soon, with some insiders believing the Sunderland fixture may have been Fernández’s final appearance in a Chelsea shirt.

Manchester City’s potential involvement adds another layer of intrigue, though current discussions are said to be informal and at an early stage. Following Pep Guardiola’s departure, City are expected to make adjustments to their squad in preparation for a new era. A player of Fernández’s profile – known for his control, intensity, and Premier League experience – would undoubtedly enhance City’s midfield options. However, Chelsea would surely be reluctant to sell a marquee player to a domestic rival.

Financially, the situation is complex. Having spent a British-record fee to sign Fernández from Benfica, Chelsea are not in a position to accept a reduced offer without risking significant accounting issues. Jacobs’ note about the club refusing to sell at a book loss is therefore crucial; even if Fernández is open to a move, Chelsea’s contractual leverage remains strong.
