Tottenham Hotspur’s midfielder Conor Gallagher has spoken candidly about the mental challenges he faced following his January transfer from Atletico Madrid. The England international admitted struggling for consistency and becoming a focal point of fan frustration during a turbulent managerial period, before eventually helping to steady the club’s form.

Midfielder battles through unstable beginning

Gallagher’s first few months at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were marked by instability after completing a £35 million move. Initially recruited by Thomas Frank, the former Chelsea player featured only five times before the Danish coach was dismissed. His replacement, Igor Tudor, offered Gallagher limited opportunities, restricting him to just six appearances during a brief and uninspiring stint that left the midfielder short of confidence and match sharpness.

Difficult experiences under previous coaches

The central midfielder spoke openly about the isolation and rejection he felt amid the constant managerial changes. Describing the emotional strain of being sidelined prior to a tactical reshuffle, Gallagher told Sky Sports: “I haven’t really been able to speak to anyone in the past few months. It’s been a really tough time for me and the team, and I’ve just focused on improving and helping as much as possible. My confidence was low, the previous manager didn’t rate me, and the fans thought I wasn’t good enough.”

Determination drives North London resurgence

Despite the sense of alienation under Tudor’s brief reign, Gallagher concentrated on strengthening his mental resilience to win back the support of the Tottenham faithful. He continued: “I think I handled that period mentally very well. I knew I could bounce back and show the fans what I’m capable of. Hopefully, this is just the beginning because I’ve got much more to offer and I’m excited to build an even stronger bond with our supporters.”

De Zerbi rejuvenates attacking influence

Under Roberto De Zerbi, Gallagher’s form has undergone a complete transformation, with the Italian manager showing full faith by starting him in every match so far. De Zerbi’s decision to use Gallagher in an advanced No.10 position over the last five games has paid off, compensating for the absence of creative playmakers James Maddison and Xavi Simons due to injury. Following his match-winning goal against Aston Villa, the midfielder heads into the summer eager to rest and refocus after missing out on selection for England’s World Cup squad.
