Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been recognised once again by his homeland for his remarkable contributions to football.

The 29-year-old first emerged at Manchester United during the 2016–2017 campaign under the management of Jose Mourinho.

Over the years, McTominay made 255 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 29 goals. He was a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but saw his involvement decrease somewhat after Erik ten Hag took charge.

In 2024, McTominay transferred to SSC Napoli, where he quickly became a key figure in Serie A. His performances earned him the Player of the Season award as Napoli clinched the Serie A title in 2025.

Since moving to Italy, he has continued to shine, netting 27 goals in 80 appearances for the southern club. His growing reputation was further underlined when he finished 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings.

McTominay has also been instrumental in Scotland’s recent footballing success.

He played a vital role in Scotland’s qualification for Euro 2024, scoring several crucial goals, and was equally influential in their journey to the upcoming World Cup.

One of his most memorable moments came when he scored a breathtaking overhead kick to open the scoring in Scotland’s 4–2 triumph over Denmark at Hampden Park, a victory that secured their place in their first World Cup since 1998.

As preparations continue for the tournament next month, that special moment has been immortalised for Scottish fans.

According to the BBC, “a limited edition £20 note featuring an image inspired by Scott McTominay’s famous overhead kick has been unveiled by the Bank of Scotland.”

The report adds that “the design merges classic banknote features with imagery of McTominay’s goal for Scotland against Denmark.”

Only a little over 100 of these commemorative notes have been printed, with around 50 being offered through collector auctions and prize draws in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Speaking about the recognition, the Carrington academy graduate said, “reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans. Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”
