Following another action-packed weekend, the Premier League title race is heading towards an intense conclusion.
Manchester City handled their assignment on Saturday by defeating Brentford 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Later that day, Arsenal managed a narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium, where a controversial VAR decision ruled out a late equaliser from Callum Wilson.
The battle for the trophy has long been a two-way contest between Manchester City and Arsenal, and it now appears that the champion could be decided before the final round of fixtures on May 24.
Arsenal currently stand on 79 points with only two matches left to play, while City have three games remaining, leaving several possible outcomes in play.
The next crucial fixture in the title race comes on Wednesday, May 13, when Manchester City host Crystal Palace at the Etihad. If Pep Guardiola’s team secure a win, they will climb to 77 points, closing the gap to just two points behind the Gunners.
However, if City fail to take all three points against the Eagles, the door could open for Arsenal to claim their first Premier League crown in 22 years when they face Burnley on Monday, May 18.
A draw would keep City four points behind Arsenal, while a defeat would leave them trailing by five.
If Arsenal defeat Burnley, they would move to 82 points — at least seven points clear of Guardiola’s side — who would then have only six points left to contest.
However, should City beat Palace, Arsenal would not be able to clinch the title in that Burnley match.
City will then head to Bournemouth on Tuesday, May 19 for their game in hand, a match they must win to keep the title race alive until the final day.
The decisive round will take place on Sunday, May 24, when Arsenal travel to face Crystal Palace and Manchester City play host to Aston Villa.
In essence, Arsenal need two victories to secure the league championship, while Manchester City must depend on the Gunners dropping points in at least one of their remaining fixtures, along with winning all of their own matches.
Given the recent weeks of high drama, few would expect the conclusion of this season to unfold without more unexpected twists.
