Manchester United are reportedly ready to initiate contract discussions with their captain Bruno Fernandes following his record-breaking Premier League season.
The 31-year-old midfielder set a new Premier League benchmark for the most assists in a single season, providing his 21st during United’s 3-0 victory over Brighton last weekend. He also found the net in the same match, capping off a stellar conclusion to his campaign.
Fernandes has experienced a remarkable revival since Michael Carrick took charge in January, succeeding Ruben Amorim. Carrick restored the Portuguese star to his preferred No.10 role in a 4-2-3-1 formation, moving away from Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 setup where Fernandes had operated deeper in midfield.
This tactical adjustment sparked a resurgence for Fernandes, who has since contributed 13 assists, surpassing the previous record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
However, United may now face a challenge to retain their playmaker following reports of a relatively low-cost release clause in his current contract.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Fernandes’ deal includes a £57 million clause that could be activated this summer unless he signs a new agreement with the club to remove it. The Italian transfer expert added that United are “open to reward” their captain after his outstanding season, as they plan for the 2026-27 campaign with Carrick as their permanent manager.
Fernandes played a pivotal role in guiding United back into the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2023-24 season under Erik ten Hag.
The Portuguese midfielder had opportunities to depart Old Trafford last summer, with Al-Hilal reportedly making an approach that he declined. In December, Fernandes admitted he had sensed that United were considering selling him.
It is understood that several Saudi Arabian clubs, as well as European sides, remain interested in securing the 31-year-old’s signature.
