EPFO: Lakhs of PF account holders (EPFO members) across the country are facing a big technical problem these days. Whenever they log in to the online portal to check their PF balance, withdraw money or update their KYC, their account suddenly appears locked or blocked. If this has happened to you too, then first of all know that there is no need to panic; Your deposits are completely safe and your account is not closed forever. In fact, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has recently tightened the security and Aadhaar authentication rules. As a result, even if there are minor mistakes in the records or repeatedly entering wrong passwords, the system blocks the account for some time due to security reasons.

Entering wrong password can be costly

A large number of PF accounts are getting locked simply because users repeatedly enter wrong information while logging in. People often forget their old passwords or get confused with different UANs from previous jobs. Apart from this, sometimes people keep trying again even after the OTP received on their mobile phone expires. EPFO’s automated security system considers these repeated failed attempts as suspicious activity and locks the account for some time to prevent fraud. Some account holders’ accounts automatically deactivate after a specified cooling-off period, while others may have to completely reset their passwords to log in.

Minor errors in data can block access.

Mistake in name or date of birth in documents is also a major reason for account blocking. Most of the employees do not know about it until they suddenly need to withdraw money from their PF account due to some emergency. Aadhaar verification can be rejected due to wrong spelling of your name, missing middle name, different format of surname or date of birth being old. Sometimes, employees update their bank details or Aadhaar information on the portal, but the approval from the employer remains stuck in the backend. Unless digitally approved by the company, online account services remain limited.

How to reactivate account

If your account is locked, the first and easiest way to fix it is through the ‘Forgot Password’ option on the EPFO member portal. Because the entire security system of EPFO now depends on OTP linked to Aadhaar, you must have an active mobile number linked to your Aadhaar card. If the issue is KYC mismatch or lack of employer approval, you will need to contact the HR department of your current or old company to get the pending request approved.

If the problem is not resolved through online methods, the account holder can lodge his complaint on the official grievance portal of EPFO. Or, as a last resort, they can reactivate their account manually by visiting their nearest regional EPFO office and submitting their Aadhaar, PAN card, bank passbook and job- documents.
