FC Bayern Munich are said to be contemplating a high-profile player exchange in their pursuit of target Anthony Gordon.
Reports indicate that the Bavarian giants are open to a potential swap deal, with goalkeeper Alexander Nübel possibly being included as part of the arrangement to bring Gordon to Munich.
As per a report from Bild, Nübel could serve as a makeweight in any agreement for Gordon, with the 25-year-old winger potentially joining Bayern Munich while Nübel heads to Newcastle United. Nübel’s loan tenure with VfB Stuttgart concludes on 30 June, and it is already apparent that he has no long-term future with either the Swabians or Bayern Munich. “We have already held discussions with his management, and Alex knows our intentions,” said Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund following their last Bundesliga fixture against 1. FC Köln. He added, referring to Manuel Neuer, Jonas Urbig, and Sven Ulreich, “We are going into next season with this trio of goalkeepers; that’s our plan.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle United are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper. According to Sky, the Magpies have identified Robin Risser of RC Lens as a potential signing, with a transfer fee estimated between 30 and 40 million euros.
In comparison, Nübel’s valuation would be considerably less, meaning Newcastle could reduce their asking price for Gordon and find a compromise with Bayern. Current reports suggest that Newcastle are demanding more than 80 million euros for the 25-year-old Englishman.
Could Alexander Nübel be on his way to Newcastle United?
Decisions regarding Nübel’s future at Bayern may take until late summer, as no concrete negotiations with other clubs have commenced. The 29-year-old is currently representing Germany at the World Cup hosted across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Furthermore, Bild claims that Nübel prefers a move to clubs in England or Italy and is not particularly enthusiastic about joining Newcastle United.
On the other hand, Anthony Gordon continues to be heavily linked with a transfer to FC Bayern Munich. The England international is believed to have already reached an understanding with the German champions over a potential move next season, though the two clubs are still far apart on valuation.
“We have agreed that we will sign an attacking player if it fits within our means,” Bayern sporting director Max Eberl commented on Friday before the DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart in Berlin during a Bild event. “We had an excellent discussion and hope to make progress soon.” While he did not name any specific player, the context strongly implies he was referring to Gordon.
