Lucknow: On the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, a major accident took place in Badaun and Bareilly districts of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. A total of 31 devotees drowned in deep water at different ghats during the holy bath. Of these, seven people died, while one girl is still reported missing. Many other people were rescued safely in time with the help of divers and local sailors. After the accidents, an atmosphere of chaos was created on the ghats.
Appeal to people to be cautious
The administration at Kachla Ghat in Badaun continued to appeal to the people to remain alert. DM Anivash and SSP Ankita themselves were present at the ghat and kept asking the devotees not to go into deep water, but despite warnings, many people went deep into the river.
In the morning, Omveer, who came from Kanau village of Hathras district, had arrived with his son and relatives to take a bath in the Ganga. While bathing at some distance from the main ghat, many members of the family suddenly got trapped in deep water. Seeing the situation worsening, local sailors and divers immediately jumped into the river. After a lot of effort, some people were taken out safely, but the bodies of two people were recovered later, while no trace of a girl could be found till late evening.
At the same ghat, two youths from Sirsa Dabarai village also got trapped in the strong current. Divers saved the life of one youth, while the other died. A young man also drowned while bathing at Ataina Ghat. As soon as the information was received, a team of police and divers reached the spot and after some time the body was taken out.
Tragic accident in Bahgul river area of Bareilly
In the afternoon, Anupam and his maternal uncle, who had come from Farrukhabad, were trying to cross the river. During this time Anupam got trapped in the whirlpool and lost his life. A tragic accident also took place in the Bahgul river area of Bareilly. While trying to save a teenager, another youth also drowned in deep water. After a long search, the bodies of both were recovered.
According to the administration, many other devotees also started drowning, but divers saved them in time. After the accidents, the administration has further tightened the security arrangements at the ghats. Officials have appealed to the people to be careful while bathing in the river and avoid going into deep water.
