Is Lionel Messi’s World Cup Participation in Doubt? Inter Miami Coach Shares Injury Update After Argentina Star Exits MLS Goal-Fest Against Philadelphia Union

Lionel Messi has triggered fresh injury concerns just weeks before the 2026 World Cup after requesting to be substituted during Inter Miami’s dramatic 10-goal encounter with Philadelphia Union. The Argentine skipper walked straight into the tunnel with what appeared to be a muscle issue, prompting his coach to issue an important update regarding his condition.

Alarm bells ring for the Argentine legend

Football fans across the globe were left anxious on Sunday night when Messi headed directly to the dressing room in the 73rd minute at Nu Stadium. The Inter Miami star seemed to suffer discomfort shortly after taking a free kick, clutching the upper part of his left thigh before signalling towards the bench that he could not continue.

Although the veteran forward managed to leave the pitch unassisted, the timing of the incident has raised concerns. With Argentina set to begin their World Cup title defence in mid-June, any potential muscular problem for the 38-year-old icon is enough to unsettle both the Albiceleste camp and their worldwide supporters.

Inter Miami coach downplays Messi’s early substitution

Despite the worrying sight of Messi being taken off early, Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos sought to ease growing speculation during his post-match press conference. He explained that the decision was largely precautionary rather than an indication of a serious injury.

Addressing the media, Hoyos said: “As far as I know, we don’t have a report on that yet, but he really was fatigued. Yes, it was fatigue. He was tired, the pitch was heavy, and rather than risk anything, it’s always best to be cautious.”

A memorable night in Florida

The injury incident somewhat overshadowed one of the most extraordinary matches in Major League Soccer history. The opening half alone produced a record eight goals, with Philadelphia Union storming into a 2-0 advantage before Messi set up German Berterame to inspire a remarkable Miami comeback.

Luis Suarez and Berterame played key roles in turning the tide, but a Milan Iloski hat-trick for the Union meant the teams went into halftime level at 4-4 — setting a new MLS record for the most goals scored in a first half. Despite heavy rain slowing things down after the break, Suarez completed his hat-trick and Rodrigo De Paul added another to seal a 6-4 victory for the Herons.

Focus shifts towards the World Cup

As MLS heads into a break to make way for the World Cup, attention now turns to Messi’s recovery and fitness for the global tournament. Argentina have yet to confirm their final squad, but as defending champions, their hopes still rest heavily on their iconic number 10 ahead of their Group J opener against Algeria on June 16.

Inter Miami currently occupy second place in the Eastern Conference, trailing leaders Nashville by just two points. All eyes will now be on the medical updates from Miami, as Lionel Scaloni and his staff await confirmation on their captain’s readiness for the upcoming World Cup challenge.
