Manchester United are reportedly readying a €100 million (£86 million) proposal to re-sign Mason Greenwood from Marseille during the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old forward was suspended by Manchester United on January 30, 2022, following allegations involving a young woman after images and videos appeared online. He was later charged with attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 that the case had been dropped.
Greenwood departed Old Trafford in July 2024, joining Marseille in a transfer worth €31.6 million, with United retaining a 50 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Since moving to France, Greenwood has largely impressed, scoring 21 goals and contributing five assists in 34 Ligue 1 appearances last season. The Manchester United academy graduate has continued that form into the 2025/26 campaign, registering 21 goals and eight assists across 42 matches in all competitions for Marseille.
According to reports from Spain, Manchester United are keen to bring Greenwood back to Old Trafford and are ‘prepared to offer’ €100 million (£86 million) for the former England international. Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly still in the race, but Manchester United have emerged as the ‘strongest option’ to secure his signature this summer.
The report further explains: “The English club is searching for attacking reinforcements and aims to rediscover its offensive identity. In this regard, Greenwood has attributes that are rare in today’s market: speed, unpredictability, finishing ability, versatility across multiple positions, and familiarity with the club’s environment. The proposed figure is striking—United could bid up to €100 million to persuade Marseille, which would make this one of the most notable transfers of the summer. For the French club, such a sale would bring an exceptional profit. However, because of the sell-on clause agreed during his exit from Manchester, the financial implications for both clubs are considerable.”
Former Marseille striker Christophe Dugarry recently criticised Greenwood’s display in early May against Nantes, suggesting that the club should consider parting ways with the forward.
Dugarry remarked: “I appeal to your pride. This youngster was sidelined from the sport, made a serious mistake before Marseille decided to take a chance on him, and the club took a risk bringing him in.
“He might never have played football again. Everyone worked hard to offer him the best possible conditions, and he disrespected everyone—it’s shameful.”
He continued: “You are supposed to be the leader of this team, the one everyone looks up to. When you’re not performing, the team suffers. And after all the effort and sacrifices made for you, this is what you give in return? It’s disgraceful—leave the club. You might bring financial gain, but no one will miss you after such behaviour. What he did against Nantes was unacceptable. He seems indifferent, shows no responsibility, and deserves to be strongly criticised. It’s an absolute disgrace.”
Meanwhile, former Marseille full-back Eric Di Meco believes that a transfer would serve the best interests of both Greenwood and the club.
Speaking on RMC’s Super Moscato show, Di Meco said: “I wonder if this player really wants to stay in a project that doesn’t include Champions League football, especially when major clubs are monitoring him and could offer him significant wages.
“I think this situation will resolve itself naturally for the benefit of everyone. I expect it to conclude with a transfer that allows Marseille to recover its investment—its most valuable asset.
“He has outgrown the club; moving on is the best solution for both sides.”
