Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed that he has received a formal offer to acquire the club but emphasised that the key challenge lies not in finances, but in finding a successor who can lead with passion and dedication.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, De Laurentiis revealed that an American consortium has expressed interest in purchasing the Serie A side. “The Americans also made a $900 million offer back in 2017,” he said. “I thanked them and told them the journey was still long. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and in 2021, an Arab group offered $3.5 billion to buy Filmauro and Napoli. I asked myself, ‘What would I do then? Retire?’ What I want to underline is that interest is normal, but the issue isn’t money; it’s whether a successor can lead with heart. Just like in filmmaking, football too must be driven by passion.”
De Laurentiis made these remarks alongside coach Antonio Conte during the post-match press conference following Napoli’s 1-0 win over Udinese on the final matchday of the season. Conte confirmed his departure from the club after two seasons in charge.
“You know, sometimes cycles end earlier than expected,” De Laurentiis remarked. He continued, “This is your home, Antonio, but perhaps you no longer feel at peace—not because of Napoli or the city, but because of the league that Napoli compels you to face in its own way.”
He went on to explain Napoli’s financial stance compared to other European giants: “Napoli can’t be like Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or the top five English clubs. We must respect our budget and cannot exceed it. The Italian league isn’t as extraordinary as before because the overall quality of play has dropped considerably.”
De Laurentiis also confirmed that he and Conte had mutually decided to part ways in April. When asked about Conte’s replacement, he remained discreet, saying, “We have a strong squad and several players returning. Maybe they didn’t fully adapt to Conte’s system, but they could perform well under a new manager.”
The Napoli chief’s comments highlight his long-term vision for the club, balancing financial discipline with emotional commitment, as he navigates offers from global investors and prepares for a managerial transition.
