Erling Haaland was not included in Manchester City’s squad for their last Premier League fixture of the season against Aston Villa. Outgoing manager Pep Guardiola explained the reason behind the Norwegian striker’s absence as he prepared for his emotional farewell to the club’s fans.
Rotation for Guardiola’s Farewell
Guardiola’s choice to leave Haaland out of the matchday lineup came as part of a broader reshuffle during his final game in charge at the Etihad Stadium. Having already lost the Premier League crown to Arsenal following a midweek draw with Bournemouth, the Spanish tactician focused on creating a celebratory atmosphere and giving opportunities to long-serving players rather than fielding his strongest team.
In total, Guardiola made nine changes to the side, selecting several players who have been key contributors to his success in Manchester. “It’s a mix, a lot of players who didn’t play for a long time,” Guardiola said before the match began.
He added, “We want a standing ovation for Bernardo [Silva] and John [Stones]. If it was the final game to win the Premier League, the selection wouldn’t be the same.”
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
Besides the sentimental aspects of the occasion, there were also practical reasons for Haaland’s omission. The prolific forward is set to join Norway’s national team for the upcoming World Cup after another demanding season in which he once again topped the scoring charts.
Even though City ended their league campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, Haaland still clinched the Premier League Golden Boot. He finished five goals ahead of his closest competitor, Brentford striker Igor Thiago, having scored 27 goals this season.
Guardiola acknowledged the physical strain on his players, saying: “A lot of players have had a lot of minutes in the last games. Many of them have been incredible in what they’ve done for this club. I’m more than happy to give them the chance to play today.”
Paying Tribute to Departing Icons
The lineup against Aston Villa was designed to honour City’s era of dominance, with Bernardo Silva and John Stones both starting. The pair are set to follow Guardiola out of the club this summer, concluding illustrious careers at the Etihad. Silva and Antoine Semenyo were the only two players who kept their places from the side that faced Bournemouth earlier in the week.
The defence featured Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, and Rico Lewis, while Phil Foden took up a creative role in midfield. Guardiola’s selection ensured that supporters could express their gratitude to the core group of players who shaped his decade-long reign at Manchester City.
Emery’s Gesture of Respect
Before the match kicked off, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery paid a heartfelt tribute to his compatriot Guardiola, presenting him with a miniature replica of the iconic lion statue from Villa Park. Emery, who has faced Guardiola 19 times in his managerial career, spoke warmly about the departing City manager’s influence and character, saying: “For me, he’s the best coach, but as a person, he’s also fantastic. I respect him because I think he’s humble. He’s always very respectful with me, and I see that with other coaches too — both in football and in life.”
