The Bank of Scotland has introduced a special edition £20 banknote celebrating Scott McTominay’s unforgettable overhead kick, marking Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage. Football fans will soon get the chance to win one of just 100 of these exclusive notes in the upcoming weeks.
The design elegantly merges traditional banknote features with imagery that reflects McTominay’s decisive World Cup qualifying goal for Scotland against Denmark.
This memorable event saw Scotland secure their place at the men’s World Cup for the first time since 1998, following a thrilling 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow last November. McTominay opened the scoring with his remarkable overhead kick, a moment that has since become iconic in Scottish football history.
Speaking about the achievement, the midfielder said, “Reaching the biggest stage in world football is a dream every player shares, and I know how much it means to our supporters. That goal belongs to every fan who has backed us through the years, so seeing it featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special. Working with the Bank of Scotland on a project that also helps Crisis and their mission to tackle homelessness makes it even more meaningful for me.”
Fans will be able to win one of the 100 newly printed notes in the coming weeks.
Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, reflected on the importance of the note: “Qualifying in such dramatic fashion is a moment Scottish fans will cherish forever, and we wanted to celebrate it in a way that feels deeply connected to our national identity. Football and banknotes have both played defining roles in Scotland’s heritage, and this limited edition £20 note beautifully brings those traditions together with a modern, creative edge.”
She added, “Scott’s overhead kick is already regarded as one of the finest goals ever scored for our country. It’s been a pleasure working alongside him to bring that moment to life in such a distinctive way, and we’re thankful for his involvement in supporting Crisis and their efforts to end homelessness across Scotland.”
Only 100 of these collector’s notes have been produced. Of these, 50 will be made available to the public through a mix of collector auctions, a prize draw, and two pop-up ‘vaults’. Funds raised from the auctions and prize draw will go directly to Crisis Scotland, the national charity dedicated to combating homelessness. The online auction is open now and will close at 11 am on Friday, 26 June, which is also the final date for prize draw entries. Additionally, pop-up vaults will appear in Glasgow and Edinburgh, where fans can attempt to crack a code to win one of these rare and highly coveted banknotes.
