Former Barcelona forward Pedro has revealed that he made personal efforts to convince some of his ex-teammates, including Lionel Messi and David de Gea, to join Lazio. The 38-year-old Spanish winger spoke about his attempts to reunite with global stars after playing his final match for the Serie A side on Saturday, expressing his wish for them to experience the same fan passion he had enjoyed in Rome.
Emotional farewell marks the end of a remarkable Lazio chapter
Pedro said an emotional goodbye to Lazio after featuring in his last game for the club against Pisa on Saturday evening, where he concluded his tenure with a goal in a comeback win. Speaking to the club's official YouTube channel, the Spaniard confirmed that his journey in the Italian capital had come to an end following a successful spell. During his time in Rome, the 38-year-old played 209 matches and scored 39 goals. It was, however, a challenging season for the team, as Lazio finished ninth in Serie A and missed out on qualification for any European tournaments.
Pedro’s ambitious efforts to recruit global football icons
While dedicating himself on the field, Pedro also tried his hand at informal recruitment. He revealed that he reached out to Messi, David de Gea, and Jordi Alba in attempts to bring them to Lazio. “I always tried,” Pedro admitted when asked if he had ever come close to convincing former colleagues to join. “Even with Messi, obviously it was not easy (laughs). Then Jordi Alba and De Gea when they were free agents. I also remember talking about Bartra with Sarri. And David Luiz. I would have loved for them to experience the passion of our supporters.”
A career shimmering with achievements
Pedro leaves Italian football with one of the most decorated resumes in the game’s history. The experienced winger is a World Cup and European Championship winner with Spain, having captured the trophies in 2010 and 2012 respectively. His time at Barcelona marked his golden era, where he claimed three Champions League titles, five La Liga championships, and two Club World Cups. In England, he continued his success with Chelsea, winning the Premier League, the Europa League, and the FA Cup.
What lies ahead for the Spanish legend?
After wrapping up his memorable spell in Italy, Pedro has yet to disclose his future plans. In his farewell message, he urged unity among Lazio’s players, supporters, and management. “The most important thing is to restore unity among the team, fans, and club, with everyone working together,” Pedro said. “I am confident that in a few years Lazio will be back winning trophies and competing in Europe. And I hope to return someday to contribute again.”
