  • LSG’s flop season
  • Will Rishabh Pant be sacked from the captaincy?
  • A big hint of team management

IPL 2026 was nothing short of a nightmare for Rishabh Pant. Lucknow Super Giants’ performance this season has been disappointing. For the third consecutive season, Lucknow failed to qualify for the playoffs. Under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, Lucknow won only 4 out of 14 matches. They are last in the points table with 8 points. This has raised serious question marks on Pant’s leadership. After LSG’s poor performance, the team’s Director of Cricket Tom Moody has hinted at major changes to the squad for next season. Due to this, a discussion has started that Pant will be sacked from the captaincy.

Tom Moody’s statement on Pant’s leadership

After the loss to Punjab Kings, Tom Moody said in a press conference, ‘We will reflect on the performance of the whole season with a calm head. We did not perform up to our standard. We have to think seriously about how the team will be led in the future. Looks like we need to start over.’ This makes it clear that the LSG management is now gearing up to take a major decision not only on the squad composition, but also on the captaincy.

‘From a captaincy point of view, it has definitely been a challenging season for Pant and it has been reflected in the results. It is important to consider whether this pressure is affecting his batting performance. I know this season has been difficult for us, but we will think deeply, take time and try to understand everything.’ Tom Moody said.

Pant will be sacked from the captaincy?

Rishabh Pant has already been stripped of the vice-captaincy of the Indian Test team. Pant may now also lose the captaincy of Lucknow Super Giants. In the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, Lucknow Super Giants bought Pant for Rs 27 crore. After that, he was handed the captaincy, but under his leadership, Lucknow Super Giants failed to qualify for the playoffs for two consecutive years. In IPL 2025, Pant captained Lucknow for the first time. At that time, the team was in the seventh position. Under Pant’s captaincy, the franchise won only 10 out of 28 matches in two seasons.

Playing for Lucknow in IPL 2026, Pant scored just 312 runs in 14 matches at an average strike rate of 138.05. During this period, he crossed the 50-run mark only once. Pant’s performance in IPL 2025 was even worse. He scored only 269 runs in 14 matches that season. According to reports, due to this, both his place in the team and the captaincy are in jeopardy and the team management may remove Pant from the captaincy.
