Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, yet many people unknowingly make unhealthy breakfast choices, believing they are nutritious. From packaged cereals and instant options to traditional Indian breakfast foods, not every morning meal provides the right balance of protein, fiber, healthy fats and sustained energy. A healthy breakfast can support weight management, improve digestion, boost metabolism and keep hunger at bay for longer. However, foods that are high in refined carbohydrates and low in protein may leave people feeling hungry soon after eating.

Recently, Delhi-based nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared an Instagram post ranking 10 popular breakfast foods from least to most beneficial for overall well-being. According to the health expert, some meals might give quick energy but can leave you hungry again in an hour. Meanwhile, others keep you fuller, support stable blood sugar and give better nutrition.

Instant oats

According to Batra, instant oats may be convenient and quick to prepare, but they often contain less protein and can be less filling than other breakfast options. While oats are generally considered healthy, highly processed versions may not provide lasting satiety, making them the least favourable choice on her list.

Upma

A staple South Indian breakfast, upma can be comforting and easy to digest. However, Batra noted that it is largely made up of refined carbohydrates and may lack adequate protein. Pairing it with curd or yogurt can help improve its nutritional profile and make it a more balanced meal.

Poha

Poha is a popular Indian breakfast known for being light on the stomach and easy to prepare. However, Batra explained that it can be low in protein when consumed on its own. Adding a serving of curd or yogurt can increase protein intake and improve fullness after meals.

Idli sambar

Idli sambar ranked higher because it combines fermented foods with protein-rich lentils. The fermentation process may support gut health, while the dal-based sambar adds valuable nutrients and protein, making it a more balanced breakfast choice.

Curd paratha

Batra placed curd paratha in the middle of the list, noting that its health benefits depend on portion size and cooking method. When prepared with moderate oil and paired with nutrient-rich ingredients, it can be a nourishing breakfast option.

Egg toast

Egg toast earned a higher ranking due to its protein content. Protein-rich breakfasts can help increase satiety, support muscle health and reduce unnecessary snacking throughout the day, making egg toast a satisfying morning meal.

Sprouts bowl

Rich in fiber, plant-based protein, vitamins and minerals, a sprouts bowl offers a nutrient-dense start to the day. Batra highlighted it as an excellent choice for digestive health and sustained energy.

Ragi pancakes

Ragi pancakes ranked among the top breakfast foods because of their fiber content and slower energy release. When prepared without added sugar, they can help maintain stable blood sugar levels and keep hunger under control.

Dal cheela

One of the most balanced Indian breakfast options, dal cheela provides a combination of protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates. Its nutrient profile makes it both filling and beneficial for overall health.

Amaranth with yogurt

Topping the list was amaranth paired with yogurt. According to Batra, this combination offers a powerful mix of protein, dietary fiber and gut-friendly nutrients, making it one of the best breakfast choices for overall well-being, digestive health and long-lasting satiety.
