The contest for the Fenerbahce presidency has taken an unexpected twist, with candidate Hakan Safi reportedly planning to unveil a “mega package” aimed at revolutionising the club. According to reports, English striker Mason Greenwood and AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini are central to Safi’s ambitious strategy to re-establish Fenerbahce’s supremacy in Turkish football.

Greenwood’s move sparks election buzz

In a development that has captured attention across the Turkish Super Lig, Fenerbahce’s presidential contender Hakan Safi is preparing to announce the acquisition of Mason Greenwood. As per journalist Levent Umit Erol, the official announcement is expected on Sunday, as Safi seeks to gain an edge over his rival, Aziz Yildirim, in the upcoming election.

The English forward, who is currently on the books at Marseille, is being positioned as the marquee signing that will define Safi’s leadership vision. Emphasising his determination to restore the club’s glory, Safi declared to supporters: “One star is not enough for my Fenerbahce,” signalling his commitment to bringing top-tier talent back to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Maldini’s Istanbul arrival imminent

Safi’s plans extend beyond player signings, with a major boost expected in the club’s management ranks. Paolo Maldini, the legendary former AC Milan captain and sporting director, is set to land in Istanbul this Saturday. The Italian icon is expected to appear alongside Safi at the Fenerbahce Faruk Ilgaz Facilities.

If Hakan Safi wins the presidential race, Maldini would take on the role of chief football advisor and global ambassador for the Yellow Canaries. This high-profile appointment aims to enhance Fenerbahce’s reputation and footballing expertise, with Safi hoping it will convince voting members of his long-term vision for the club’s success.

Greenwood’s impressive Marseille season

Fenerbahce’s pursuit of Greenwood follows an exceptional season for the 24-year-old in France. Despite Marseille’s reported financial challenges, the forward has been one of the standout performers in Ligue 1, delivering statistics that have drawn the attention of several major European clubs.

During his campaign at the Stade Velodrome, Greenwood recorded 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. His 37 direct goal contributions underscore his crucial role in Marseille’s attack. Known for his versatility on both wings and his sharp finishing, Greenwood represents the “mega bomb” signing Safi has promised the Fenerbahce faithful.

Greenwood reiterates desire to stay in Marseille

As Safi pushes to disrupt the club’s existing structure with major names like Greenwood and Maldini, he remains focused on his campaign pledge to assemble a squad capable of instilling fear in opponents. He previously asserted: “We will build a squad that will make the opponents’ knees tremble.”

However, this news arrives shortly after Greenwood expressed his intention to remain in France. While celebrating his inclusion in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season, the 24-year-old addressed transfer speculation, stating: “This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months, but individually I think I’ve had a good season. There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it’s nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches, and for me, it’s one of the best leagues I’ve played in. I hope I can stay.”
