Europa League and Conference League remain within reach for the Blues as the Premier League season reaches its climax.
Chelsea enter the final day of the Premier League campaign uncertain about whether they will feature in European competitions next season.
The Blues face Sunderland away on Sunday, with their European hopes hanging in the balance.
Xabi Alonso is set to take charge at Stamford Bridge this summer. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager surely expects to lead a team competing on the continental stage.
Chelsea currently occupy eighth place in the Premier League table and are in a tight race for a European qualification spot. To secure a place in next season’s league phase, they must deliver a top performance on the final day.
While qualification for the Champions League is out of reach, there are still opportunities for the London club to make it into either the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.
To book a Europa League spot, Calum McFarlane’s side must achieve a better result than Brighton on Sunday.
The Seagulls are hosting Manchester United as they compete with Bournemouth for the final Champions League berth. That spot will go to the sixth-placed team following Aston Villa’s Europa League victory. However, sixth place will only enter the Champions League if Aston Villa finish fifth in the table.
If Unai Emery’s men end the campaign in fourth place, then the sixth-placed team will instead qualify for the Europa League.
This scenario would also move seventh place into the Europa League, as Manchester City’s FA Cup triumph means their Europa League qualification will transfer to the league standings.
Pep Guardiola’s side have already secured Champions League qualification regardless of that outcome.
Brighton are currently in the driving seat for that seventh spot and head into the final day in pole position. A win would confirm Fabian Hurzeler’s team a place in the Europa League next term.
At present, Chelsea occupy the only available Europa Conference League position. They remain under pressure from both Brentford and Sunderland, who are just behind them.
Brentford travel to Anfield, trailing Chelsea only on goal difference. Keith Andrews’ side cannot simply “better” Chelsea’s result on Sunday, since the Blues are directly playing Sunderland.
If Sunderland defeat Chelsea and also record a better result than Brentford’s at Liverpool, the Black Cats would climb into eighth place and claim the final European berth.
For Chelsea to ensure qualification for the Europa Conference League, they must avoid defeat at Sunderland and at least match Brentford’s result at Anfield.
