Lucknow. On the second day of the National Senior Athletics Championship, Punjab sprinter Gurinderveer Singh performed brilliantly in the men’s 100 meter sprint race and created a new national record by clocking 10.09 seconds. With this achievement he has become the fastest runner in the history of Indian athletics.
25-year-old Gurinderveer, representing Reliance Foundation, won the gold medal, leaving behind his arch-rival Animesh Kujur of Odisha. In the final he defeated Animesh by a margin of more than two feet.
Record broken twice in semi-finals
The competition took a thrilling turn when the national record was broken twice in just a few minutes in the semi-finals on Friday. First, Gurinderveer Singh clocked 10.17 seconds, breaking the previous record (10.18 seconds), which was set by Animesh Kujur last year.
Shortly afterwards, 22-year-old Animesh took the record back to his name by registering a time of 10.15 seconds in the second heat. But in the final, Gurinderveer Singh surprised everyone with a performance of 10.09 seconds and became the first Indian to run in less than 10.10 seconds.
Pranav Gurav of Reliance Foundation got the third place with a timing of 10.29 seconds.
Major achievements of Gurinderveer Singh
Gurinderveer Singh’s time of 10.09 seconds is better than the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifying standard (10.16 seconds), thereby securing his qualification. This time is the second fastest in Asia this season. In May, 19-year-old Fukuto Komuro of Japan had set a time of 10.08 seconds.

Gurinderveer Singh, who hails from Punjab, is an expert in short sprint events. After this achievement, he got the title of ‘Fastest Runner in Indian History’. He has also qualified for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
World record for 100 meter race
The world record for men’s 100 meters race is 9.58 seconds, which is held by legendary Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt. He made this record in the Berlin World Athletics Championships in 2009.
This performance of Gurindervir Singh is a new chapter for Indian athletics and strengthens India’s hopes in the upcoming big international events.
