Valencia 3-1 Barcelona
Neither Valencia nor Barcelona could celebrate at the Mestalla on Sunday, as Valencia’s impressive 3-1 comeback win over the Catalan giants was not sufficient to earn them a spot in European competition next season.
Valencia, known as Los Che, required at least a victory to leap into seventh place — La Liga’s final UEFA Conference League position — while Barcelona were looking to close an excellent campaign on a high note with three points. The first half, however, was largely uneventful, with both sides struggling to create clear chances, leaving the scoreline goalless at the break.
The deadlock was finally broken on the hour mark, and it was Barcelona who struck first. Ferran Torres fired a shot from inside the penalty area that was redirected into the net by Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker was visibly elated, scoring in his final appearance for the club after drawing a blank in his farewell at Spotify Camp Nou the previous week.
Yet Barcelona’s lead was short-lived as Valencia mounted a swift response. Javi Guerra capitalised on an error from substitute Xavi Espart to fire home the equaliser. Moments later, Luis Rioja sent the Mestalla crowd into ecstasy, making it 2-1 with a composed strike that beat goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny at his near post.
Barcelona pressed hard for an equaliser, with Andreas Christensen seeing his header well saved by Valencia’s goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski. However, the hosts sealed the result in stoppage time when Guido Rodriguez added a third to confirm the victory.
While Valencia will take satisfaction from ending their season on a high note, their late push for European qualification ultimately fell short. Having secured safety the previous week, they will now aim to build on this progress and return to the top seven of La Liga in the near future.
For Barcelona, the defeat will not cause much concern. Their focus now turns to the upcoming summer transfer window, with club management preparing for significant squad reinforcements under Hansi Flick ahead of the next season.
