SBI Bank Strike Cancelled: A very good and useful news has come out for the customers of State Bank of India, which will provide them relief from a lot of trouble. In fact, the nationwide bank strike to be held on 25th and 26th May has been postponed for the time being.

This decision was taken after talks between the bank management and the employee union, when both the parties agreed on the demands of the employees. As a result, all SBI branches across the country will remain open normally and banking operations will continue without any interruption.

How did the postponement of the strike provide relief to customers from major problems?

If this strike had happened, a big crisis would have arisen, due to which banks would have remained closed continuously for several days. In fact, banks were already closed on 23 May (being the second Saturday of the month) and 24 May (Sunday). Immediately after this, a strike was to take place on 25 and 26 May; And after that, there are Bakrid holidays in many states on 27th and 28th May. Under these circumstances, if there was a strike, banking services could remain disrupted for six consecutive days, leading to major problems like cash shortage and delay in check clearance.

After all, why were the bank employees planning to go on strike?

‘All India State Bank of India Staff Federation’ (AISBISF) had called this strike to fulfill many old and pending demands of the employees. The union alleged that negotiations with the bank management were not progressing satisfactorily, due to which dissatisfaction was increasing among the employees.

What were the main demands of the employees?

Lack of recruitment: For the last 30 years, there has been no recruitment on the posts of ‘Messenger’.
Opposition to outsourcing: Permanent positions (particularly in the areas of trade finance, agricultural support and security services) are being outsourced to external contractors.
Pension issues: There was a delay in getting permission to change the pension fund manager under the National Pension System (NPS).
Security concerns: Despite incidents of ATM thefts and attacks, no new armed guards have been recruited since 2022.

What happened during the conversation?

On Friday, May 22, an important meeting was held between SBI Management and Staff Federation at the Corporate Center in Mumbai. This meeting proved to be very constructive. According to the union, the bank management adopted a flexible approach towards their demands, and considerable progress was made on several important issues. A consensus was reached between the two parties, after which the union decided to withdraw all its protests and the scheduled two-day strike. SBI has officially issued an advisory assuring its customers that all regular banking services will remain fully operational on May 25 and 26.
