Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah could be set for a remarkable reunion with one of his former clubs once his chapter at Anfield comes to an end this summer.

The Egyptian superstar, who has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success in recent years, is reportedly being targeted by one of his ex-employers.

After nine memorable years on Merseyside, Salah has confirmed that the current season will mark his final campaign for Liverpool. During his time with the Reds, he has lifted nearly every major trophy available, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s greatest players.

Despite still having a year remaining on his contract, reports suggest that Salah could depart Anfield as a free agent at the end of the season.

Ranked fifth in FourFourTwo’s list of the greatest Premier League players of all time, Salah has left an indelible mark on English football. He has been named PFA Player of the Year in 2018, 2022, and 2025, and has won two league titles with Liverpool along the way.

With manager Arne Slot keen to rebuild his squad following a £400 million spending spree last summer, the 33-year-old winger appears ready to embrace a new challenge – one that could see him don the colours of a familiar club once more.

According to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Spanish publication Fichajes, AS Roma have initiated an ambitious plan to bring Salah back to the Italian capital for a second spell at the Stadio Olimpico.

Salah first joined the Giallorossi on loan from Chelsea in 2015 before making the switch permanent the following year. During his time in Rome, he scored an impressive 34 goals in all competitions across two seasons, becoming a fan favourite before moving to Liverpool.

The latest report adds that the Saudi Pro League remains interested in signing Salah, continuing their long-standing pursuit. However, given that the forward has previously turned down lucrative offers to stay in Europe’s top competitions, there is renewed optimism in Italy that he might do so again, with “initial discussions already taking place to assess the possibility.”

Roma, however, would need Salah to prioritise sentiment over financial reward, as Gian Piero Gasperini’s side cannot compete financially with the offers likely to come from Saudi Arabia, Major League Soccer, or Europe’s wealthiest clubs.

Kevin De Bruyne’s decision last summer to choose Napoli over more lucrative options demonstrated that Serie A still holds strong appeal for top players. Roma could hope for a similar scenario, though their chances would improve significantly if they secure Champions League qualification.

FourFourTwo understands that while a return to Roma for Salah remains unlikely, it cannot be ruled out entirely. The circumstances surrounding his impending Anfield departure have piqued the interest of several of the world’s richest clubs.

With Salah seemingly available on a free transfer, he is expected to attract significant attention, as potential suitors may be willing to offer higher wages without the burden of a transfer fee.

According to Transfermarkt, Salah currently holds a market value of €30 million. Liverpool are set to return to action after the international break with a high-profile FA Cup clash against Manchester City.
