Kolkata. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached Kolkata on Saturday on his four-day visit to India. His journey is starting from a city which has special importance from political and historical point of view. A foreign minister from America has arrived in Kolkata after 14 years. Earlier in May 2012, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had visited Kolkata. This visit of Rubio is taking place at a time when West Bengal is witnessing a major political change in the form of the formation of a new government under the leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
US Ambassador’s statement
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore posted on ‘X’ and said, “Foreign Minister Marco Rubio has reached Kolkata. This is his first visit to India. Later today we will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. In the coming days, trade, technology, defence, Quad and many other issues will be discussed and cooperation will be taken forward.
In another post, the US Ambassador said, “I am very pleased to welcome my friend Marco Rubio to India. Our agenda for the coming days is very important and wide-ranging, which also includes the meeting of foreign ministers of the Quad countries. Its objective is to carry forward the vision of the US President to further strengthen the India-US partnership. I look forward to meaningful talks and concrete progress.”
What did the US State Department say?
According to the US State Department, Rubio will also visit the ‘Mother House’, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in central Kolkata, and a children’s home in the city. Rubio will be on a visit to India from 23 to 26 May. During this period he also has a plan to visit Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. This visit is being considered important from diplomatic point of view, because it is proposed to discuss energy cooperation with India and a meeting of foreign ministers of Quad (Quaternary Security Dialogue) countries.
Before leaving for India, Rubio told reporters in Miami, “We want India to sell as much energy as it can buy.” American production and exports are at historic levels at this time.” On the question to the possible energy crisis on India due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio described India as a ”reliable and important partner” and expressed excitement about meeting the ministers of the Quad countries. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will chair the Quad meeting on May 26. Apart from Rubio, Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will attend this meeting.
