Beijing, 23 New. About 82 people have died due to an explosion in a coal mine in China’s Shanxi province. Expressing grief over this incident, Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued instructions regarding the search for missing people and treatment of the injured. This information was given by Xinhua news agency. According to the news agency, the rescue operation is currently going on. The accident occurred on May 22 at the Liushenyu coal mine, which is operated by Shanxi Tongzhu Group. According to Xinhua, “Reporters have received information from the site of the gas explosion at Tongzhou Group’s Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province that 82 people have died in the accident.”
The explosion occurred at a coal mine in Shanxi on Friday at 7:29 pm local time (11:29 GMT). It is reported that 247 employees were present on duty at the time of the incident. Rescue operation is going on at the spot. President Jinping (also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission) instructed to properly handle the situation after the accident and thoroughly investigate the causes of the accident. He said that accountability of those responsible should be fixed as per law.
Xi Jinping stressed that officials across the country should learn lessons from the accident, remain vigilant about workplace safety, and step up efforts to identify and eliminate potential risks so as to prevent major accidents. He also said that incidents of natural disasters like floods may increase in the coming season, hence emergency preparedness should be strengthened. Concrete measures for flood control and disaster relief should be taken to ensure safety of people’s life and property.
Prime Minister Li Qiang also issued instructions regarding rescue operations and accident investigation. Li Qiang, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, urged to strengthen workplace safety monitoring nationwide and carry out comprehensive safety inspection campaigns in key areas to prevent major accidents. Vice Premier Zhang Kuojing has arrived at the scene with a team to carry out rescue operations and monitor the situation after the accident.
