IPL Bonus Point Rule: The race for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is very exciting every season, but discussions regarding the point system keep coming up from time to time. This time, former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has given a suggestion which has sparked a new debate among cricket fans. He believes that teams that win big in the tournament should get extra points, to make the competition more interesting.

What is the rule of IPL at present?

The IPL started in 2008 and no major changes have been made to the points system since then. According to the current rule, the winning team in any match gets two points, while the losing team gets no points. If the match is canceled due to rain or other reasons, both the teams are given one point each.

Interestingly, no matter how big the victory margin is, the points remain the same. Whether the team wins by one run on the last ball or wins the match by 100 runs, it gets only two points. The benefit of winning by a big margin is visible only in the form of net run rate.

Aakash Chopra gave a new suggestion

Aakash Chopra believes that implementation of bonus point system in IPL should be considered. While sharing his opinion on social media platform X, he wrote – I wish IPL also adopts the option of bonus points for big wins. In fact, Aakash Chopra believes that this will inspire the teams not only to register wins but also to achieve impressive wins. The audience will also get to see more aggressive and competitive cricket.

This rule is already applicable in SA20

South Africa The bonus point system is already in place in India’s T20 league SA20. There, if a team chasing the target wins the match within 16 overs as against the stipulated 20 overs, then it gets an extra point. The team batting first gets a bonus point if it restricts the opposition team to its own score by more than 20 percent. The purpose of this rule is to encourage big and impressive wins.

if in future IPL If such a rule is implemented in IAS also, then the mathematics of the marks table may change completely. Many times, even a team that wins less matches can reach the top with the help of bonus points. With this, the battle for the playoffs can remain open till the last stage and the importance of every match will increase further.
