England head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that he was taken aback by Harry Maguire’s public response after the experienced defender was excluded from the Three Lions’ 26-man World Cup squad. While the German tactician praised the Manchester United centre-back for his impressive season, he defended his final selections, which were guided by a strategy centred around established leaders within the squad.
Veteran defender left out of final list
The 33-year-old United defender learned of his omission on Thursday and promptly took to social media to issue a heartfelt statement confirming he would not be part of the squad. His announcement came a day before Tuchel’s official press briefing on Friday, where he confirmed his defensive picks — Marc Guehi, Dan Burn, Ezri Konsa, John Stones, and Jarell Quansah. Maguire had been named in the provisional squad back in March, and his early post triggered immediate discussion among fans and pundits ahead of the coach’s formal disclosure.
Tuchel explains his defensive decisions
Addressing the situation after Maguire’s statement, Tuchel emphasised his respect for the defender’s professionalism and quality but reiterated that his decision was driven by consistency in team structure.
Tuchel explained: “I was a bit surprised, but I respect his personality a lot, I respect his quality a lot. He has had an outstanding season. I can understand his disappointment and the reasons behind it.
“Still, I was a bit surprised because we had a private conversation, and he had the chance to share his feelings — which he did, and that was fair. I completely understand why he believes he could have been in the squad. But in the end, we decided to remain loyal to the central defenders who carried us through September, October, and November.
“Some of them are part of the leadership group that took ownership and maintained high standards. The final call was made for the collective 26 players, even if it felt harsh on individuals.”
Maguire expresses disappointment online
Maguire’s exclusion prompted an immediate and emotional reaction on social media. The seasoned international, who had been confident of reclaiming a regular spot after a strong domestic season, voiced his frustration and sadness at missing out.
In his statement, Maguire shared: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than wearing that shirt and representing my country over the years.”
He added: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best this summer.”
England’s Group L test awaits
Tuchel’s squad selections will be tested immediately as England prepare to tackle a demanding Group L campaign featuring Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. Without Maguire’s commanding aerial presence, England’s defensive unit will face a stern examination of its cohesion and adaptability. The onus now falls on the remaining senior players to uphold Tuchel’s tactical vision and leadership standards. As for Maguire, he will use the summer to reflect on the disappointment before rejoining Manchester United for pre-season preparations.
