Indian National Congress has questioned the Central Government as to what further announcements US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will make regarding Indian foreign policy.

New Delhi: A new political controversy has emerged regarding India’s foreign policy and international sovereignty. The Congress Party has alleged that senior US officials are making public information about important decisions and announcements to India’s foreign policy before India. The issue has given rise to debate at both political and diplomatic levels.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has questioned the Central Government as to why the US State Department is announcing decisions to its foreign policy before India.

Controversy over Marco Rubio’s statements

This statement of Congress comes after the recent public statements of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Jairam Ramesh, while sharing a video on social media platform ‘X’, claimed that Rubio made many important diplomatic information public before India. According to the report, Rubio had earlier shared information to the Quad meeting in Miami and the visit of the Venezuelan President to India, although these were officially confirmed later by India or the countries concerned.

Congress also alleged that the US Secretary of State had earlier given a statement regarding information to “Operation Vermillion” on May 10, 2025. The party says that this situation raises questions on the independence and decision-making process of India’s foreign policy. However, there has been no detailed official response from the government on this issue.

Questions also regarding Venezuela President’s visit

Another aspect of the controversy is to the proposed visit of the Venezuelan President to India. Congress claimed that this visit was also announced earlier by the US Secretary of State, while formal confirmation from India or Venezuela came later. The trip was connected to an event by the International Big Cat Alliance, which was later postponed due to the Ebola virus outbreak in Africa.

Congress says that such incidents raise concerns over India’s diplomatic sovereignty. The party’s question is that when the decisions to the foreign policy of any country are being announced by some other country before India, then what is its diplomatic message. Jairam Ramesh raised questions, saying that if this trend continues, it could affect India’s independent foreign policy image.

This is not the first time that there has been a clash between the opposition and the government on issues to India’s foreign policy. In the last few years, there has been intense political debate on India’s role on global forums, strategic partnerships and diplomatic announcements.
