Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was forced off the field during their match against Nottingham Forest after picking up a head injury.
The Spanish shot-stopper collided with Morgan Gibbs-White during the 3-1 defeat, marking Chelsea’s fourth consecutive Premier League loss of the season.
Sanchez was substituted midway through the second half at Stamford Bridge, with Filip Jorgensen taking his place following the collision.
His early exit has raised concerns about how much of the remainder of Chelsea’s season he might miss, including the FA Cup final against Manchester City on 16 May.
Although the incident was not officially recorded as a concussion substitution under Premier League rules, Sanchez is now considered doubtful for the upcoming league clash with Liverpool.
Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard, plan to strictly adhere to concussion protocols before their trip to Anfield to fully determine whether Sanchez is fit to return to action.
If the 28-year-old goalkeeper fails any part of the medical evaluation, he will be required to observe a minimum 12-day rest period in line with the Football Association’s ‘return to play’ regulations.
Chelsea currently trail by 10 points in the race for the final Champions League spot but still have a chance to qualify for the Europa League or the Conference League.
They could also secure a late route into Europe’s top-tier competition if they finish sixth and Aston Villa, currently in the top five, go on to win the Europa League.
Calum McFarlane’s squad sit just four points behind sixth place with three games remaining.
McFarlane has stepped in as Chelsea’s interim head coach for the second time this season, following Enzo Maresca’s departure in January and Liam Rosenior’s exit at the end of April.
Although the 40-year-old failed to win his first two matches in charge, he did guide the Blues to the FA Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.
Chelsea’s remaining fixtures include matches against Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sunderland.
