Manchester United have confirmed the permanent appointment of Michael Carrick as the club’s head coach.

The 44-year-old has penned an initial two-year contract at Old Trafford after a highly successful interim spell in charge. Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim in January and guided the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League.

During his 16 matches as interim manager, Carrick secured 11 victories, including notable wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. His impressive performance has convinced the United hierarchy to hand him the position on a full-time basis after a comprehensive recruitment process.

Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Carrick’s contribution and said the former midfielder has ‘thoroughly earned’ the chance to lead the team permanently.

“Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In his time in charge, we’ve witnessed not just positive results on the pitch but also an approach that reflects the club’s core values, traditions, and heritage,” Wilcox stated.

He added, “Michael’s success in steering the club back to the Champions League must not be underestimated. He has built a strong connection with the players and established a winning mentality both at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we will continue to strengthen.”

Speaking about his permanent appointment, Carrick expressed his pride and determination to take the club forward. “Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride,” he said.

“Over the past five months, this group of players have demonstrated they can meet the high standards of resilience, unity, and determination that we expect here. Now, it’s time to push forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be competing for the biggest honours once more.”
