Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of finalising their first major signing of the summer, as they move closer to sealing a €53 million agreement with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

Earlier, Spanish club Atletico Madrid had reached an understanding with Ederson on personal terms, but the deal fell through after they hesitated to meet Atalanta’s asking price.

According to reports, Manchester United and Ederson have already settled on personal terms in principle. The 24-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract worth €5 million annually, placing him among the club’s highest-paid midfielders.

Ederson’s current contract with Atalanta runs until June 2027. However, his agent, Andre Cury, has publicly stated that the player will not be extending his deal. This situation leaves the Bergamo-based side vulnerable to losing one of their most prized assets for free next year if they do not agree to a sale this summer.

The Brazilian midfielder, lauded as “out of this world” by Fabio Capello, has featured in 180 matches for Atalanta since his move from Salernitana in 2022, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists. Over this period, he has developed into one of Serie A’s most complete box-to-box midfielders.

The urgency behind Manchester United’s move, led by INEOS, is driven by a forthcoming reshuffle in the club’s midfield. Veteran star Casemiro has likely played his last game for the Red Devils, with a transfer to MLS outfit Inter Miami imminent. Meanwhile, Uruguayan international Manuel Ugarte is also expected to leave following a challenging season.

With Kobbie Mainoo emerging as the cornerstone of United’s midfield future, the club’s management is determined to recruit a dynamic, high-intensity box-to-box presence to complement their tactical framework.

Nevertheless, Ederson may not be the only midfield reinforcement arriving at Old Trafford this summer. Manchester United are also reportedly exploring moves for Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes as part of their broader squad rebuild.
