Thomas Tuchel was questioned about Harry Maguire’s remarks made last night, in which the defender expressed that he was ‘shocked’ and ‘gutted’ over being left out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
The England head coach faced the media at Wembley on Friday (22 May), where he was asked to explain his decision to exclude Maguire from the tournament lineup.
Addressing the issue, Tuchel said: “I was somewhat surprised, but I have a great deal of respect for his character and his ability. He has had an excellent season, and I completely understand the disappointment he feels.”
He added: “I was still a little surprised, though, because we had a private discussion where he was able to share his thoughts. However, we decided to stay committed to the central defenders who supported us strongly through September and November.”
