Manchester United are reportedly showing ‘genuine interest’ in signing Portuguese forward Rafael Leao this summer, as revealed by Italian journalist Pietro Balzano Prota.

This development comes as the Red Devils prepare for another major squad overhaul in the upcoming transfer window, with the club set to return to Champions League action next season.

Prota is not the first reporter to link United with Leao, suggesting there may be some real basis behind the ongoing rumours surrounding the AC Milan attacker.

Reports further claim that United might even consider offering out-of-favour striker Joshua Zirkzee as part of a player-plus-cash deal in order to avoid paying Leao’s hefty £103 million release clause.

The 26-year-old forward has built an impressive record at AC Milan, registering 80 goals and 65 assists in 290 appearances. During his time at the San Siro, he has helped the Rossoneri secure both the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup.

Although this season has not been his most prolific, with 10 goals and three assists in 30 matches, Leao’s form has still earned him a call-up to Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad for the World Cup. He is set to feature alongside Manchester United teammates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot when Portugal begin their campaign.

However, any possible transfer discussions are expected to be delayed until Leao’s return from the tournament.

A graduate of Sporting CP’s academy, Leao has yet to play in England but brings substantial European experience from his spells in Portugal, France with Lille, and Italy with Milan.
