Pakistan ISI Espionage Racket: A spy racket supported by Pakistan has been busted in Punjab. Punjab Police has arrested a man from Pathankot in this case. A seemingly innocuous CCTV camera in Pathankot has now become the focus of investigation by a major spy network. Punjab Police has arrested a man who is accused of installing an internet-based camera on National Highway 44 (NH-44) to monitor the activities of the Indian Army and paramilitary forces and pass the information on to handlers linked to Pakistan. Investigative agencies believe that this is part of a new type of espionage being carried out in the border area using digital equipment.
Who is the accused?
The arrested accused has been identified as Baljeet Singh, resident of Chak Dhariwal village of Pathankot district. According to the police, he had deliberately installed a CCTV camera near a shop on Pathankot-Jammu road. This place was near a bridge on NH-44 from where army and paramilitary convoys regularly pass towards Jammu and Kashmir. Investigators believe that the camera was installed in such a way that it could record live footage of the movement of defense vehicles and security forces. This footage was being sent directly to the handlers in Pakistan through the internet. According to the police, the accused was getting instructions from a man sitting in Dubai, who had allegedly given him about Rs 40,000 for this operation.
Sensational claim of Punjab Police
Punjab Police says that during initial interrogation, Baljeet Singh admitted that he had installed the camera in January this year and had shared its live feed with outsiders. Police have also recovered the camera and equipment from him. The investigating agencies are now examining his mobile records, bank transactions and foreign contacts to find out whether he was part of any big espionage network. The case has also raised concerns among security agencies as it did not involve an attempt to infiltrate a military compound, but used easily available internet-based cameras. Security experts have long warned that Wi-Fi cameras, drones, mobile apps and other digital devices are becoming cheap but effective ways to gather intelligence. In the Pathankot case, investigators suspect that live streaming from CCTV cameras was being used to monitor military activities.
Attempt to locate spy network
Although the police have not yet revealed the details of the entire operation, officials say that the investigation was started after receiving initial inputs about suspicious surveillance activities in the area. Based on the statements of the accused and technical evidence during interrogation, the police came to the conclusion that the cameras were being used to share sensitive information. Pathankot Police also confirmed the arrest on its official social media accounts and said that the accused has been arrested for espionage activities and further investigation is underway. The agencies are now trying to find out which communication systems were used to send information to contacts abroad and whether other people also helped in this operation.
Terrorist attack in Pathankot
This arrest has taken place at a time when in the last one year there have been reports of many actions on espionage and suspicious activities in the border states of North India. Central agencies and Punjab Police have consistently warned that Pakistan-linked networks are trying to collect information about military bases and troop movements through local people, social media contacts and digital devices. Pathankot is considered one of the most sensitive military areas of India, because it is very close to the Pakistan border and Jammu and Kashmir. This area holds strategic importance for military movement and defense infrastructure. After the terrorist attack on Pathankot Air Force Station in 2016, security has been tightened here. Therefore, the alleged use of a simple camera installed on the highway for spying is being seen as a new challenge for the security agencies.
