FMGE 2026 Exam Details: There is extremely important news for those returning to India after completing their medical studies abroad. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has opened the final edit window for the FMGE examination. Candidates who have applied for this exam—and whose forms contain errors or who have failed to upload necessary documents—can visit the official website, natboard.edu.in, to rectify these issues immediately.

Passing the FMGE is mandatory to obtain a license to practice medicine in India. In fact, merely obtaining a medical degree from a foreign university is not sufficient; legally, passing the FMGE is a prerequisite for treating patients in any hospital within India. This examination often generates a mix of anticipation and anxiety among candidates. Read on to learn what the FMGE is, when it will be held this year, and why passing it is essential.

What is the FMGE Exam?

FMGE stands for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination. It is also referred to as a 'Screening Test.' The National Board of Examinations (NBEMS) conducts this exam twice a year (typically in June and December). Its primary objective is to assess whether the medical knowledge of doctors who have studied abroad meets the standards established in India. Without passing this examination, no foreign medical graduate can register or practice as a doctor in India.

FMGE Eligibility Criteria 2026: Who Can Take the FMGE?

Any Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) who has completed their MBBS or an equivalent degree at a foreign medical college outside of India is eligible to take this examination. A mandatory requirement is that the candidate must possess a certificate of primary medical qualification from the respective country, and their medical college must be recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Additionally, candidates are required to submit an Eligibility Certificate confirming the completion of their degree.

FMGE Exam Pattern and Passing Marks

The FMGE is a completely Computer-Based Test (CBT). A total of 300 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) are asked in this examination. The exam is divided into two shifts (comprising 150 questions each). The most reassuring aspect is that there is no negative marking involved. To pass the examination, a candidate must secure a minimum of 150 marks (50%) out of 300. Although there is no negative marking, the exam is considered one of the toughest in the country due to its extensive syllabus.

When will the FMGE exam be held in 2026?
According to this year's schedule, the final edit window has now gone live following the completion of the FMGE application submission process. Students can log in using their credentials to rectify discrepancies regarding details such as their photograph, signature, or thumb impression. Subsequently, the admit cards will be issued in June, and the examination itself will also be conducted in June. Candidates are advised to keep a close watch on the official portal for any sudden changes to the dates.
