Thomas Tuchel has come under fire from Harry Maguire’s mother after the Manchester United defender was omitted from England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The official 26-man squad is set to be confirmed on Friday, when Tuchel will reveal which players will accompany him to the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Most of the squad details began to surface on Thursday evening, with journalists Ben Jacobs, Sami Mokbel, and David Ornstein among those disclosing who had made the cut and who had been left out.

The first major exclusion reported was that of Manchester United’s centre-back Maguire. Despite a strong season under Michael Carrick, it appears that Jarell Quansah and Dan Burn have been preferred ahead of him in the defensive lineup for England.

Reacting to the decision, Maguire expressed his disappointment, saying, “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.”

His mother also shared her feelings online, writing a brief but emotional message on X: “Absolutely disgusted.” Maguire’s brother Joe joined in, stating, “This might possibly be the worst decision I’ve ever seen in my life. No words.”

Tuchel is expected to explain his selection choices, including Maguire’s omission, in his Friday morning press conference. Other notable absentees reportedly include Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Luke Shaw, and Morgan Gibbs-White.

According to BBC Sport’s latest information, 25 of the 26 players have already been identified, with the final spot expected to go to either Myles Lewis-Skelly, Trent Alexander-Arnold, or James Garner.

Before the news of the squad became public, Alan Shearer had predicted that Arsenal youngster Lewis-Skelly would not make the final cut for the World Cup. Speaking to Metro, Shearer said, “Tuchel has used Hall and Livramento in a left-back position as well, so my guess is that two of the three will go. Nico O’Reilly I think will definitely go and then it will be one of either Livramento who will go left or Lewis Hall.”

Discussing Lewis-Skelly further, Shearer added, “I think he’s not played a lot of football this season, he’s just come back into the fold, into the midfield, and he’s been exceptional. But whether that’s been enough to get him into the left-back position or midfield, I don’t think so.”
