Six Key Duels That Could Shape the Women's Champions League Final Between Barcelona and Lyon
Sameer Bhatia | May 22, 2026 11:29 AM CST

For the fourth time in seven years, Barcelona and Lyon are set to face off in the Women's Champions League final on Saturday. With Lyon holding eight titles and Barcelona three, the rivalry between these European powerhouses continues to define the modern era of women’s football. This season has only reinforced the view that these two sides are currently the elite forces in the game.

Their first meeting came back in 2018 during the quarter-finals, when Barcelona were still in the early stages of their project to become continental champions. Even though Lyon went on to claim their third of five consecutive European crowns, Barcelona’s spirited performance in that tie was an early sign of their growth.

The following year, the two met again—this time in the final. Barcelona’s journey to their first-ever Women’s Champions League final was a major achievement, but Lyon’s 4-1 victory demonstrated that the Spanish club still had progress to make to reach the very top.

That breakthrough arrived in 2021 when Barcelona dominated Chelsea 4-0 in the final to lift their first Champions League trophy. But any notion that they had overtaken Lyon as Europe’s leading club was quickly dispelled the next season, as Lyon reclaimed their supremacy with a 3-1 win in the 2022 final in Turin.

By 2024, however, Barcelona had truly established themselves among Europe’s elite. The Spanish champions secured a 2-0 victory in Bilbao for their third title in four years, proving that they could now be mentioned alongside Lyon not just in historical terms, but as equals in the present day.

As the 2026 final approaches, the storyline writes itself: can Lyon avenge their 2024 defeat and add a ninth title to their record haul, or will Barcelona bounce back from last year’s loss to Arsenal to clinch a fourth crown? Let’s take a closer look at the six individual battles that could define the outcome in Oslo.

Wendie Renard & Ingrid Engen vs Ewa Pajor

In her second season with Barcelona, Poland’s Ewa Pajor has been a consistent goal threat once again. With nine goals in nine games, she sits atop the scoring charts and is a major reason Barcelona are back in another final. Standing in her way this time are two familiar defenders.

Pajor’s reputation was forged during her time at Wolfsburg, one of Europe’s top clubs, where she reached four Champions League finals—losing three of them to Lyon. In two of those matches, Pajor started, but French star Wendie Renard consistently came out on top in their individual duels. The two will renew that rivalry again this weekend.

Partnering Renard in defence is Ingrid Engen, who previously shared the locker room with Pajor at both Wolfsburg and Barcelona. The Norwegian has enjoyed an exceptional debut season with Lyon, emerging as one of the top centre-backs in world football. This final will serve as a true test of her defensive prowess as she faces her former teammate.

It sets the stage for a gripping contest among three players of exceptional quality, as Pajor seeks to finally capture a Champions League title that has so far eluded her.

Patri Guijarro vs Melchie Dumornay

Lyon’s approach to managing Barcelona’s midfield strength will be crucial. The French giants have several possible combinations to choose from as they look to counter the influence of Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí, both in Ballon d’Or form. But regardless of the setup, Melchie Dumornay is expected to play a central role—and stopping her will be just as critical for the Spanish champions.

Dumornay has been one of Lyon’s standout performers all season, often emerging as the best player on the pitch. While her goal and assist numbers may not be as prolific as in previous years, her overall impact has been immense, placing her firmly in the Ballon d’Or conversation.

If Lyon are to triumph, Dumornay will likely be instrumental. That’s where Patri Guijarro comes in. Recognised as perhaps the world’s best defensive midfielder, Guijarro’s ability to dictate play and neutralise opposition threats will be vital for Barcelona.

In their last meeting, the 2024 final, Dumornay operated further forward, posing more of a challenge for Barcelona’s centre-backs. Seeing her deployed deeper this time, engaging directly with Guijarro in midfield, adds another intriguing layer to their matchup.

Jule Brand vs Ona Batlle

After emerging as a teenage sensation at Hoffenheim, Jule Brand has reached a new level this season. Her move to Lyon has revitalised her career, and at 23, she has become a key figure for the French champions. Her performances in the semi-final win over Arsenal, where she scored in both legs, underline her growing influence—especially with Kadidiatou Diani ruled out of the final.

That absence means Lyon will rely even more heavily on Brand’s creativity and pace down the flank. Standing in her way is Ona Batlle, who is expected to play one of her final matches for Barcelona before a likely move to Arsenal. Eager to sign off with another Champions League triumph, Batlle will need to be at her best against a player in top form, especially after her struggles against Klara Bühl in the semi-finals against Bayern Munich.

Caroline Graham Hansen vs Selma Bacha

Caroline Graham Hansen has once again delivered when it matters most. Her performances this season have been consistently excellent, and playing in her hometown of Oslo offers added motivation to shine in the final.

Her direct opponent, Selma Bacha, is one of the best full-backs in the world. Renowned for both her attacking drive and defensive strength, the French international will be tasked with balancing her forward runs while containing one of the most dangerous wingers in the game. Their previous duels have been evenly split—Bacha came out on top in Lyon’s 2022 win in Turin, while Graham Hansen dominated in Barcelona’s 2024 victory in Bilbao. The 2026 chapter of their rivalry promises another compelling showdown.

Esmee Brugts vs Ashley Lawrence

Since joining Barcelona three years ago, Esmee Brugts has grown into a vital figure. This season, she has started all ten of the club’s Champions League games, contributing four goals and four assists from left-back to help the team reach the final once again.

Brugts had been preparing to face Diani, but with the French forward sidelined due to a knee injury, Lyon will likely turn to Vicki Becho on that side. Becho, just 20, has shown promise—scoring twice in Lyon’s Coupe de France win over Paris Saint-Germain and registering four goals and three assists in her last seven appearances. However, she lacks Diani’s big-game experience, potentially giving Brugts more license to attack down her flank.

Brugts’ attacking instincts will test Ashley Lawrence, a full-back more renowned for her defensive awareness than offensive output. Lawrence’s ability to handle Brugts one-on-one, while also supporting Becho in attack, could prove crucial for Lyon as they seek to offset the absence of their star winger.

Jonatan Giraldez vs Pere Romeu

While the on-field battles will capture most of the attention, the tactical duel between the managers is just as fascinating.

Jonatan Giraldez guided Barcelona to their 2024 Champions League triumph, completing a historic quadruple in his final season before moving to the United States to coach the Washington Spirit. Now, in his debut campaign with Lyon, he faces his former club for the first time.

Opposite him stands Pere Romeu, who was part of Giraldez’s coaching staff before succeeding him as Barcelona head coach. The two share an intimate understanding of each other’s methods, setting up a chess match between mentor and protégé.

Giraldez enters with greater experience and a deeper trophy cabinet, as well as insider knowledge of many Barcelona players. Romeu, however, has impressed with his management of a leaner squad amid financial constraints, nurturing young talents and keeping the team competitive. For him, this final offers the perfect stage to prove his credentials.

Will the apprentice outwit his master, or will Giraldez once again lift the Champions League trophy—this time with a different club?
