Djed Spence has been diagnosed with a broken jaw after a clash with Liam Delap during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday night.
According to Standard Sport, the defender is expected to feature in Tottenham’s final Premier League match of the season against Everton, wearing a protective face mask to safeguard the injury.
The incident occurred in the 87th minute when Delap’s elbow struck Spence in the face. Referee Stuart Atwell booked the Chelsea forward with a yellow card for the challenge.
Although Spence immediately went down holding his face, he managed to complete the match and later addressed the incident on social media.
The right-back, who came on as a second-half substitute against Chelsea, has made 43 appearances across all competitions for Spurs this season.
However, the 25-year-old has found it difficult to cement a place in Roberto De Zerbi’s starting eleven, with Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro preferred in the full-back positions.
Spence has started only one of Tottenham’s previous six fixtures and appears unlikely to be part of England’s final squad for this summer’s World Cup, despite being selected for the national team during the March international window.
Tottenham will enter their last match of the campaign knowing that victory over Everton will secure their Premier League status. A draw is also expected to suffice due to their stronger goal difference compared to West Ham United.
The north London club currently sit two points above the relegation zone but could drop into the Championship if they lose to Everton and West Ham defeat Leeds United at the London Stadium.
