Granit Xhaka has made a surprising comeback to the Premier League by joining Sunderland in a £17 million transfer, despite Erik ten Hag’s appeal for him to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland confirmed the signing of the ex-Arsenal midfielder in a deal worth £17 million. Xhaka has agreed to a three-year contract with the Black Cats after spending two successful seasons with Leverkusen, where he won both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. The Swiss international brings with him vast Premier League experience, having made 225 appearances during his time at Arsenal.

The move marks a major coup for Sunderland but comes as a blow to ten Hag and Leverkusen. The Dutch manager had publicly stated that losing Xhaka would “undermine the structure and culture of the squad.” Despite his stance, Xhaka joins Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Jonathan Tah in departing the Bundesliga champions this summer.

Speaking to Sunderland’s official website, Xhaka expressed his excitement about the new chapter in his career. “I’m very proud to be here. When I spoke to the club, I felt the energy and mentality of everyone involved, and it was exactly what I wanted. I have a great feeling about this move. We are back where this club deserves to be, and we want to stay here while creating our own history. I’m ready to contribute with both my experience and quality. We’ll find our rhythm on the pitch soon, and I don’t think that will be a big issue. It’s been a long wait, but I’m finally here and can’t wait to get started.”

Xhaka will wear the No. 34 jersey for Sunderland, continuing the number he wore previously at his former clubs.

The Swiss midfielder will now link up with his new teammates for pre-season training as Sunderland prepare for their Premier League opener against West Ham on August 16.
