Will Manchester City allow their most lethal striker to join a rival club during the upcoming summer transfer window?
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, the Jamaican forward, has been a crucial player for Manchester City and played a key role in their Women’s Super League triumph this season — their first title in ten years.
Even after securing the Golden Boot, the Women’s Super League Player of the Season award, and being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, speculation continues to grow around Shaw’s potential exit from the newly crowned champions this summer.
Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that the 29-year-old striker was expected to leave Manchester. Since then, her future has been the subject of intense debate, with Chelsea emerging as a likely destination for the prolific goal scorer.
When the initial reports surfaced, many fans and analysts were taken aback. Manchester City had just reclaimed the WSL title from Chelsea after a decade, and now they appeared on the verge of losing their most influential player.
Just a few days after the news broke, Chelsea faced Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. Chelsea were leading 2-0 with only four minutes of normal time remaining, but City struck twice in quick succession to force extra time.
As expected, it was Shaw who netted the equaliser and later scored the winner in extra time, sending City to Wembley and keeping their hopes of completing a domestic double alive.
Was that Shaw’s way of sending a message to Manchester City that she wants to stay?
The Jamaican international has been exceptional this season, scoring 21 goals in 22 league appearances and 26 in all competitions.
She also claimed her third consecutive Golden Boot and set a new WSL record for the fastest hat-trick ever — finding the net three times in just 12 minutes and 37 seconds.
Shaw has been transparent about her wish to remain in Manchester. Speaking to Sky Sports at the FWA Footballer of the Year ceremony — where she won the award for the second time in three years — she was asked if she wanted to stay at Manchester City.
Shaw responded, "Yeah, I've always said that Manchester is my home. They have welcomed me from the beginning, and now we are at a stage where we are achieving our goals and winning trophies. We have a big final coming up, and we’ll see what happens after that."
According to initial reports, Manchester City are finding it difficult to match the offers being made elsewhere. Chelsea are reportedly prepared to offer Shaw a salary of around £1 million per year, which is roughly equivalent to two weeks of Erling Haaland’s wages in the men’s team.
With the FA Cup final still ahead, City’s immediate focus remains on securing more silverware, but the uncertainty surrounding Shaw’s future continues to cast a shadow over the club’s celebrations.
