Manchester United pulled off a remarkable 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, handing caretaker manager Michael Carrick his second win in as many games. Despite falling behind to a Lisandro Martinez own goal, United responded strongly through Bryan Mbeumo. Patrick Dorgu and substitute Matheus Cunha then scored superb long-range strikes to secure all three points and deal a blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title chase.
Arsenal started brightly and dominated possession early on, but it took a fortunate deflection to break the deadlock. Bukayo Saka’s cutback found Martin Odegaard in the box, whose shot was inadvertently turned past Senne Lammens by Martinez, giving the hosts the lead.
United reacted positively to the early setback, with Bruno Fernandes missing two good opportunities. The equaliser came courtesy of Bryan Mbeumo, who capitalised on a poor back pass from Martin Zubimendi. The Cameroon international stayed composed, rounded goalkeeper David Raya, and slotted home to make it 1-1.
The match exploded into life shortly after half-time when Dorgu produced a moment of magic. Receiving a pass from Fernandes, the left-back unleashed a thunderous volley from just outside the area that smashed off the crossbar and into the net, leaving Raya helpless.
Mikel Arteta responded by making a flurry of substitutions, introducing Ben White, Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, and Mikel Merino as he searched for a leveller. Noni Madueke was brought on soon after, but Arsenal struggled to create clear chances against a resolute United defence.
The equaliser eventually came from a set piece when Merino bundled the ball home after Lammens failed to clear a corner, levelling the score at 2-2. However, United’s response was immediate. Matheus Cunha picked up the ball just outside the box and curled a brilliant effort beyond Raya, sealing a dramatic win for the visitors.
Here’s how Manchester United’s players were rated from their performance at the Emirates:
Goalkeeper & Defence
Senne Lammens (7/10): Made an excellent stop from a Martin Zubimendi header in the first half and denied Saka in the second, though he was caught out during the corner that led to Arsenal’s second goal.
Diogo Dalot (6/10): A steady performance at right-back, engaging in a competitive duel with Leandro Trossard throughout.
Harry Maguire (8/10): Commanded the backline effectively, using his aerial strength to good effect and confidently bringing the ball out of defence before Dorgu’s stunning strike.
Lisandro Martinez (6/10): Unluckily deflected the ball into his own net under pressure from Jurrien Timber. Recovered well and made a vital tackle in stoppage time to deny an Arsenal break.
Luke Shaw (7/10): Contained Saka effectively on the left flank, ensuring the winger had limited space to operate.
Midfield
Casemiro (8/10): Despite nearing the end of his United tenure, delivered a commanding display. Dominant in midfield and constantly breaking up Arsenal’s rhythm.
Kobbie Mainoo (7/10): Another solid showing from the youngster. Maintained discipline in midfield, though he appeared fatigued in the second half—understandable given his recent lack of match minutes.
Attack
Amad Diallo (6/10): Not his most impactful outing in a United shirt but still delivered a few dangerous crosses that tested Raya.
Bruno Fernandes (6/10): Missed two big first-half chances but played a crucial role in Dorgu’s goal with a well-timed assist.
Bryan Mbeumo (8/10): A constant threat to William Saliba and Gabriel, showing great composure to round Raya and score his ninth goal of the campaign.
Patrick Dorgu (8/10): Quiet in the first period but came alive with a spectacular volley to put United ahead 2-1.
Substitutes & Manager
Matheus Cunha (8/10): Made an immediate impact from the bench, curling in a magnificent winner to seal the result.
Benjamin Sesko (6/10): Tried desperately to clear the ball off the line but couldn’t prevent Merino’s equaliser.
Noussair Mazraoui (N/A): Featured only in the closing minutes, with little time to influence proceedings.
Michael Carrick (8/10): Stuck with the same starting XI that defeated Manchester City and was rewarded with another impressive win. His attacking approach late in the game and the substitution of Mbeumo for Cunha proved decisive, as the Brazilian netted the winner.
