Former Cuban President Raul Castro, brother of the legendary Fidel Castro, was accused by the US of plotting to kill US citizens, destroying the plane and four murders. 30 years later, the US Department of Justice indicted Raul based on those allegations. US President Donald Trump has warned Cuba a few hours after the charges against Raul. The question is, will Cuba be like Venezuela or Iran?

1996 incident. ‘Brothers to the Rescue’ (a voluntary organization of anti-Fidel refugees fleeing to America) reaches the skies over Cuba to rescue Cuban anti-Fidel fighters. The Cuban army shot down that plane. Fidel was the president of Cuba at that time. Brother Raul was the country’s defense minister. Needless to say, the plane was attacked on Raoul’s orders. The United States started an investigation against Raul in the nineties accusing him of this incident. Charges were framed after three decades.

Raul is now 94 years old. There is uncertainty about how he will be presented in the US court. After Fidel, Raúl was the president of Cuba from 2008-2018. Stepped down as head of the Communist Party of Cuba in 2021 due to age. The filing of charges against that adult three decades later is significant, especially given Trump’s warning so soon after the charges were filed. In Trump’s words, America is ‘liberating’ Cuba. I don’t know what is in store for the island nation after that.

Cuban President Miguel Diez-Canel did not take kindly to such a warning to an independent and sovereign country. He condemned the framing of charges against Rahul. He also called America a liar. Although the international diplomatic circles are afraid – Castro’s country may be a victim of American aggression in the future.
