Vitinha has opened up about the continuing influence of Cristiano Ronaldo within the Portugal national football team as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup. The midfielder expressed that the squad’s dream is to lift the trophy both with and for their legendary captain.
The pursuit of World Cup glory
Speaking about Ronaldo’s impact, Vitinha highlighted how the Al Nassr forward, despite being in the later years of his illustrious career, remains central to Portugal’s mindset heading into the global competition. Currently playing in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo’s role extends far beyond his performances on the pitch — he continues to inspire his teammates with his dedication and commitment.
As Portugal prepare for the expanded World Cup to be hosted across North America, Ronaldo’s presence remains a major motivating factor for the group. During a conversation with FIFA, Vitinha noted that the players are determined to achieve the one major international title that has so far eluded their captain.
Ronaldo’s leadership continues to shape the team
Vitinha shared that Ronaldo’s discipline and professionalism have a profound effect on the squad. Despite some external debates over his continued place in Portugal’s starting lineup, the midfielder insisted that no one matches Ronaldo in terms of work ethic and preparation.
“He’s one of the greatest players in history,” Vitinha stated. “I’m very proud to share the dressing room with him, to learn from him, and to observe his professionalism every single day. I truly hope we can win the World Cup with him and for him.”
He further added, “It’s mainly about how he approaches the game — with complete professionalism and seriousness. He never leaves anything to chance. Every time he steps on the field, he knows he is 100 per cent ready and has done everything possible to help the team.”
‘Our only goal is to win’
Vitinha also admitted that while Portugal’s ultimate target is to win the World Cup, they are aware of the challenges that lie ahead. He emphasised that the team’s present focus is on taking things one match at a time.
“We just want to win,” he said. “We know it’s going to be tough, but there’s no point in thinking too far ahead about the final or the trophy, even though that’s our dream. We’ve got to take it step by step — that’s always the best way. Right now, our attention is entirely on the group stage. If we do well there, then we can start thinking about the next stages.”
Portugal’s mix of youth and experience
Portugal’s hopes for the 2026 World Cup will depend largely on how effectively they can combine their emerging young talents with the experience and leadership of senior figures like Ronaldo. Head coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed his final squad for the North American tournament, including both Vitinha and Ronaldo. In the upcoming competition, Portugal have been drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
