New Delhi: These days a new social media trend is creating a huge stir in the digital and political corridors of the country. An online satire campaign that started with the name ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ (@cockroachjantaparty) has become the country’s biggest political trend on Instagram in just a few days. The strength of this campaign can be gauged from the fact that within just four days of launching, this account has crossed the magical figure of more than 11 million (1 crore 10 lakh) followers.

BJP behind in the race of followers, Congress still ahead
As soon as this account touched the figure of 11 million followers on May 21, it overtook the official Instagram handle of the country’s ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) (@bjp4india) in terms of followers, which currently has around 8.7 million followers. However, the main opposition Congress is still leading the race, with about 13.2 million followers on its official Instagram account (@incindia). Whereas Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has about 1.9 million followers on Instagram. While BJP has made more than 18 thousand posts to reach this milestone, Cockroach Janata Party has made this record with just 56 posts.

Supreme Court hearing started
This entire movement started in a humorous manner on May 16 on the social media platform X (Twitter). It is being told that after an alleged comment by Honorable Chief Justice Surya Kant during a hearing in the Supreme Court, the youth turned it into a satirical movement. Its Instagram account was launched the very next day, which crossed the figure of 30 lakh in just 78 hours and 11 million in four days. Apart from this, it also has 1.65 lakh followers on X.

New platform for youth’s anger
The platform describes itself as ‘a political platform of the youth, for the youth and created by the youth’. Its posts mainly focus on unemployment, political accountability, exam paper leaks and grassroots issues to youth in the country. After defeating BJP, this account took sarcasm by writing sarcastic posts like ‘World’s Largest Party They Said’. Political analysts believe that this trend is a big indication of the growing resentment within the youth against traditional politics and social media based expression.
