On Wednesday morning, the lifeless body of the daughter was in front of the father from whom she had cried and begged for her life on Tuesday evening. This hair-raising incident has once again exposed the dreadful reality and curse of dowry which is deeply entrenched in the society.

The last phone call and the eerie silence

At around 6:30 pm on Tuesday evening, the phone of farmer Balbir Singh of Khumawali village rang. The name of his 19-year-old daughter Pushpendri Devi was on the screen. As soon as I picked up the phone, only sobbing and sounds of fear were coming from the other side. Pushpendri was extremely scared and was crying helplessly. She gasped and told her father that her in-laws would not leave her alive. The father consoled his daughter, assuring her that he would be coming soon to pick her up. Balbir Singh had never imagined even in his dreams that the voice he was hearing from his daughter would be the last one. Just a few hours after this conversation, the ringing of the phone turned into an eerie silence forever.

Before the helpless father could reach his daughter, he received news that knocked the ground out from under his feet. Pushpendri's body was found hanging under suspicious circumstances in a room of her in-laws' house in Bagadpur Choiya under Adampur police station area of ​​Amroha district. The parents allege that this is not a normal suicide, but a premeditated and barbaric murder. The family members claim that Pushpendri's in-laws first brutally assaulted her, took her life and then hanged her body to deceive the law so that the entire incident would look like a suicide.

That deadly demand of Rs 10 lakh

Pushpendri was married to farmer Ompal, resident of Khumavali village of Gajraula area, on 13 February this year. Father Balbir Singh had given huge dowry in the marriage as per his status and ability. But greed has no limits. Within a few days of the marriage, husband Ompal and his family started becoming unhappy with the dowry given. It is alleged that Pushpendri was being pressurized to bring additional cash of Rs 10 lakh from her maternal home. In lieu of not being able to bring this huge amount, he was being continuously tortured mentally and physically, which ended horrifyingly on Tuesday night.

Accused absconding, truth of post mortem revealed to police

After this sensational case, there is an atmosphere of tension and mourning in the area. Circle Officer (CO) Pankaj Kumar Tyagi said that based on the complaint of the deceased's father, the police has taken immediate action. A case (FIR) has been registered against a total of five people, including Pushpendri's husband Ompal, father-in-law Rajendra, mother-in-law Indravati and two other relatives, under sections 80 (dowry death), section 85 (cruelty to women) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and relevant sections (3/7) of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Traces of noose and police investigation

According to the police, the body has been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem. Initial investigation has found deep noose marks on the neck of the deceased. The police officer clarified that the real cause and exact time of death will be revealed only after the post mortem report comes. Meanwhile, all the accused are absconding after leaving the house after committing the crime. The police have formed several special teams to actively search for the accused and send them behind bars. The law may be taking its course, but the last words of his daughter are still echoing in Balbir Singh's ears - "Papa, he will kill me."
