Real Betis star Antony has expressed his disappointment after being left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup. Despite an outstanding season in La Liga where he rediscovered his form, the former Manchester United winger will not be part of the Selecao’s campaign.
Revival in Spain not enough
Since departing Manchester United, Antony has undergone a major transformation, becoming an essential player for Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin Stadium. His performances in Seville have been a stark contrast to his struggles in the Premier League. However, those efforts were not enough to secure him a place in Brazil’s final squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The 26-year-old shared his emotions shortly after the squad announcement. “I’m saddened not to be at another World Cup with the national team, but I’m calm and proud of everything we’ve achieved so far,” Antony told his followers, acknowledging that while the decision was painful, he remains proud of how far he has come since moving to Spain.
Dedication to the Selecao dream
The winger, now a fan favourite at Betis, quickly turned his attention to supporting his national teammates. With Brazil chasing their sixth World Cup title, Antony stated he would be cheering for them as a loyal fan.
“I will keep working as I always have because this dream is still alive,” he wrote on social media. He added, “Now it’s time to support my friends who will represent Brazil in the quest for the sixth star. I’ll be cheering them on from here.”
Impressive record at Betis
The decision to exclude Antony has surprised many observers in Spain, given his impressive statistics this season. In 45 appearances across all competitions for the Verdiblancos, the Brazilian winger has scored 14 goals and contributed 10 assists, ranking among the most productive forwards in La Liga. His consistent form since joining Betis even earned him a call-up from Ancelotti in June 2025, though that remains his sole appearance under the Italian manager.
Rest planned for the final league fixture
Aside from the disappointment of missing the World Cup selection, Antony is also managing a physical issue. The player has been dealing with a recurring groin problem for several weeks, which has affected his performance and drawn concern from the club’s medical team.
As Betis have already secured their qualification for next season’s Champions League, the coaching staff are opting for caution. Consequently, Antony is expected to sit out the final match of the season against Levante to prevent any further injury complications.
