Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) has announced an increase in milk prices by Rs 4 per liter, which will be effective from June 1. This decision was taken in the board meeting held on Wednesday. According to Milma Chairman KS Mani, the majority of this increase – Rs 3.75 out of the total increase of Rs 4 – will go directly to dairy farmers.

The board had postponed the decision on price changes due to the recent assembly elections, and was waiting for the new government to assume power. However, this decision had to be taken due to increasing pressure from milk producer unions. The unions said that dairy farmers are facing a serious crisis due to skyrocketing prices of animal feed and labor as well as a huge decline in milk production in summer.

According to Mani, the previous government had given its consent for the price increase, and later the board of directors had also discussed the matter. He said that however, since the election code of conduct was in force at that time, it was suggested that this decision be implemented only when the restrictions are lifted. The election code of conduct remained in force in the state till May 6.
